Abstract:	Colleagues in ecology designed an experiment to see whether various favourable responses were affected by the number of different species present in the ecosystem, keeping the total number of organisms constant. I thought that their data were better explained by a model that was more obvious to me. I will describe the experiment, the family of models we discussed, the conclusion from the data analysis, and the design of subsequent studies.
